Growing Pains...

Ubuntu- I am because you are.
You are because I am...
                         - A DEEP AFRICAN WAY OF BEING

I have grown too big for my skin!
For though my body weight has decreased,
I have added mass...
     the bodily reality of people,
     countless people, who have
     become part of me...
who are even now taking up
     space within my being as
     who-I-have-been struggles
to enlarge herself to make room to include them.

So that is why I feel so uncomfortable these days...
Growing pains!
     as my aging body,
          my complacent life are being
forced to grow, to expand in ways
          hitherto unknown...
     as realization dawns:
WE NEED EACH OTHER TO BE COMPLETE.

The person I am- this entity
which bears the name Linda-
is continually enlarging as I
am blessed to welcome more and more
persons into the circle of my loving concern,
into the heart of my very being.
I am because you are...
the Divine in me sees the Divine in you...
and only in opening myself
to the pain of linking other lives
to mine can I know the depth and breadth
of this amazing this called Love...
God incarnate in every living being...
     holiness in every encounter...
     blessing in every relationship...
the pain and glory of being fully human.

New Worldview...

A clash of cultures
does not have to mean war...
but rather the opportunity
to put the scattered pieces
back together in another form,
                           a different shape,
composed of all the best of both...
contrasts complementing,
in many ways completing
the picture...
humankind at its very best,
                            most beautiful...
as many colors, faiths, cultures
stand together hand in hand,
                        heart to heart...
                                    one world.

Karibu, Kenya

Breathing in a different air...
   though molecules are surely shared
   across the miles which separate
the worlds in which I live and breathe...

Breathing in a different energy...
the ethos and the values of
a culture a world away from
   my usual milieu...

Breathing in a different way of being...
   moving at a slower pace,
content to watch and wait and let
the feel of Kenya soak into my very pores...
        saying, "Karibu, Linda, karibu."
                         WELCOME!

Here At Last!

In the Greensboro airport:
A kind driver...
a kinder airline agent...
smiles abound in a near-empty
     airport...
and a smiling female pilot with
red hair adds a touch of whimsey
     to our flight...
Pippi Longstocking in the driver's seat-
              Ready to go...ready to fly!

After two lo----n----g days of travel, leaving home at 6:15a.m. on Sunday, July 3rd, we finally arrived here at the Wildebeest Tent Camp in Nairobi at 9:30p.m. last evening, July 4th (2:30EDT). In spite of its lengthiness, with 3 legs of flight from Greensboro to Atlanta, Atlanta to Amsterdam, and Amsterdam to Nairobi (about 18 air hours in all), the travel went surprisingly smoothly...though I must comfess that the double-decker KLM jet to Nairobi was more than a little intimidating. I mean, how does that thing get off the ground? But fly it did...and it was awesome to see the Mediterreanea Sea and the Sahara Desert from the air. Incredible, indeed.

Seeing Julius at the airport was a bit like coming home. His broad, welcoming smile and enfolding hug let me know that I was indeed back in Kenya. And upon arriving at the Wildebeest, I received another warm hug from Urbanus, a young man I had met here last summer. What a way to be received! Much to my amazement, he remembered my name and was truly delighted to see me again. (You must understand- hundreds of people pass through this place each month...it astounded me that he remembered one small, white-haired woman from the US for an entire year.)

Now it is morning...after a wonderful, full night's sleep in our lovely tent, our home-away-from-home for the next 2 weeks and a delicious breakfast (had not eaten since about 3p.m. yesterday). A slow day ahead...practical errands like changing some money to Kenyan shillings, purchasing bottled water at the Nakumat (a large supermarket), buying a Kenyan cell phone and some minutes, and- best of all- making a first visit to the Nyanya Project preschool to see the children- watoto, in Swahili. Yes, I AM in Kenya and ninafurahi (I am happy)! Tutaonana, rafiki yango. (See you later, my friends.)

Getting Ready...Counting Down...

Written on Thursday, June 23rd
A mere ten days until T-day- and I have brought myself to my favorite retreat center in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina for a couple of days of “R&R”: reflection & renewal. I have been coming to this quiet, lovely home-away-from-home for nearly 10 years and in that time, the staff at Well of Mercy have become dear and valued friends. Driving over the final hill to see the Well nestled in the valley below slows my breathing…settles my heartbeat…and the welcoming hugs from Julia, Karen, and Sister Donna yesterday were food to my spirit as fully as the wonderful, home-cooked meal shared by 10 of us last evening fed my body.

Peculiar how I always seem to get what I most need when I come here. The meditation in chapel last evening was on fear…how often we let it interfere with what we’re supposed to do, with what we’re supposed to learn about ourselves. Then a bit of time spent studying Kiswali, some reading on my Kindle, and I was in bed by 10p.m. But before I could fall fully asleep, a mighty wind began raging outside…treetops waving wildly…the whole world seemingly being swept by this powerful Ruach- this breath of God. And as I lay there in the darkness- it is fully dark here at the Well; no extraneous lighting from the surrounding world nor sounds of traffic or other people, no TV or ringing telephone- it seemed to me that I was being blown clean…that fears and doubts were being blown away…cleared out of my mind and heart to make room for what will be filling them both in the coming weeks. And perhaps that is why I am here…to clear out anything and everything which will interfere with my full engagement with the people, the work, the energy and ethos of both Kenya and Rwanda in the journey which lies ahead of me.

As I look outside this morning, I can see branches and leaf clusters littering the lawn around my cottage…the storm took its toll as storms always do. But the clearing and cleansing are also part of the aftermath…the opportunity for what is new to fill the spaces left by the clearing away of the old. So here I am at this moment…refreshed after more than 8 hours of sleep, freshened by the cleansing winds which removed accumulated detritus, and ready for the adventure and service which lie ahead in Africa. Asante kuwa Mungu! Thanks be to God!

in preparation…
Breathe…
Breathe out fear…
Breathe out the concern of making mistakes…
Breathe out the anxiety of not having enough…

Breathe…
Breathe in peace…
Breathe in comfort and energy and love…
Breathe in courage and wisdom and strength…

Let go…
      of the need to control…
of the need to have all the answers…
of the need to know, always know…

Embrace…
     mystery…
     adventure…
     hope…

Dare…
     to step out in faith…
     to leap into the darkness…
     to do the previously unthinkable…

Celebrate…
the challenge of living with integrity…
the wonder of following life-long dreams…
the gifts of compassion and service…

Now…NOW…
I am prepared for the journey.

Why not go out on a limb?

To dwell in new spirit is to enter a complete spontaneity of direction;
this is a voyage of trust imbued with passion- any destination is possible.
-John O'Donohue

here & now
Here i stand, on the threshold
of adventure...preparing to be
borne aloft by huge silver wings
in the gravity-defying mystery
of flight, to places far beyond
my usual scope of life...

Here i stand, readying myself
to take a daring leap into the
unknown, certain that a voice
of love & compassion is
calling me...

Here i stand, naked & shivering
in the brilliant light of the
reality of tickets purchased,
reservations made, preparations
well underway...

Here i stand, aware of the
enfolding arms of Love which
are surrounding, uplifting,
carrying me forward into
the beckoning future...

Here i stand- but soon I will SOAR!

Preparing for the Journey...

Step by step, it is happening...the plans for my return to Africa are becoming real. Plane tickets now purchased...travel insurance, too.
And with each tangible step, my excitement increases, made all the more wonderful by the fact that one of my traveling companions will be my long-time best friend, Mae. She, too, has long dreamed of traveling to the land of all of our beginnings... feeling the same kind of connection i have long felt without knowing why...only knowing she is being drawn, as i have been, to re-connect with some ancient voice calling from the depths of the unknown past. Unexplainable...how does one put words to intuition, to mystery, to what is only a deep, internal certainty?
I can only say for both of us that Africa is calling...with a siren-song neither of us can resist.

To find your real capabilities you must push yourself through your comfort zone. -Patrick Lindsay

preparing for the journey...
Empowerment must come from within myself...
as i wrestle with anxiety & fear...
as i deal with my physical body...
as i open myself to all of the possibilities
which lie within me.
The only limitations are the ones i imagine,
the ones i choose to give power...
so...

Joy & Wonder are the companions i choose,
accompanied by Compassion & Curiosity.
Half a world away lie a different horizon,
unknown vistas, mysteries at present foreign
to my eyes & ear...
half a world away live people whose visage
and language will open my eager, searching
mind and heart in ways now only dreamed.

O Creative & Creating God,
grant me the courage to leave expectations
and agendas behind...the wisdom to
understand that only by walking willingly
into the unknown will i continue to become
fully myself...the strength to be flexible,
to bend without breaking, to welcome the
awaiting gifts of the unknown.
Africa awaits...!
